The story behind the journey

More than a road through the mountains.

The Ha Giang Loop is one of Vietnam’s most remarkable journeys, but its story began long before motorcycles and travellers arrived.

For generations, H’Mong, Tay, Dao and Lo Lo communities lived throughout these valleys and limestone mountains. Villages were connected by narrow paths, local markets and traditions passed from one generation to the next.

The landscape shaped everyday life, including farming, trade, healthcare, education and travel throughout northern Ha Giang.

In 1959, construction began on Happiness Road, creating a route that would eventually connect Ha Giang City with Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac.
