Discover one of Vietnam's most spectacular waterfalls, surrounded by towering limestone mountains, turquoise rivers and the beautiful countryside of Cao Bang province.
Ban Gioc Waterfall is one of the most impressive natural attractions in northern Vietnam. Located in Cao Bang province, along the border between Vietnam and China, this incredible waterfall is known for its cascading turquoise water, dramatic limestone mountains and peaceful rural surroundings.
Unlike a single narrow waterfall, Ban Gioc stretches across several sections, with water flowing over multiple levels of rock into the river below. The surrounding landscape makes the experience even more memorable, with green valleys, traditional villages and limestone peaks creating a truly spectacular setting.
Whether you're travelling through Cao Bang or exploring more of northern Vietnam after your Ha Giang adventure, Ban Gioc Waterfall is a destination well worth discovering.
Ban Gioc is famous for both its size and its beautiful natural surroundings. The waterfall forms part of the Quay Son River, which flows through the mountainous border region between Vietnam and China.
Water tumbles over wide limestone ledges, creating several beautiful cascades. Depending on the season, the falls can appear powerful and dramatic or reveal more of their distinctive stepped rock formations.
The surrounding scenery is equally impressive. Towering limestone mountains rise above green fields, while the river winds through peaceful countryside dotted with small villages.
It's this combination of waterfalls, mountains and rural landscapes that makes Ban Gioc one of the most photogenic places in northern Vietnam.
Although the waterfall itself is the main attraction, there are several ways to enjoy the area and make the most of your visit.
Ban Gioc Waterfall can be visited throughout the year, although its appearance changes considerably depending on rainfall and seasonal weather conditions.
During the wetter months, generally from May to September, increased rainfall can make the waterfall particularly powerful. The surrounding mountains and countryside also become beautifully green.
From around September to November, visitors can often enjoy a good balance of flowing water, lush scenery and more comfortable weather, making this a popular period to visit.
During the drier winter and spring months, water levels may be lower, revealing more of the limestone formations beneath the falls. The landscape can still be beautiful, with a quieter and more peaceful atmosphere.
As with many natural attractions in northern Vietnam, conditions can change with the weather, so the experience may vary from one visit to another.
Ban Gioc Waterfall is located in Trung Khanh District, Cao Bang province, close to the Vietnam-China border. It is approximately 85 kilometres from Cao Bang City, although the journey takes longer than the distance might suggest because of the winding mountain roads.
The drive is an experience in itself, passing through beautiful valleys, limestone mountains, agricultural landscapes and small countryside communities.
Ban Gioc is not on the standard Ha Giang Loop route, but it can make an excellent addition to a longer northern Vietnam travel itinerary.
Cao Bang is home to several other remarkable natural attractions, making it worth spending more time exploring the region rather than visiting the waterfall alone.
Nguom Ngao Cave, located near Ban Gioc, is known for its impressive limestone formations, underground chambers and fascinating natural features.
Phat Tich Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda is another popular stop, offering beautiful views across the surrounding mountains and waterfall area.
The wider Cao Bang countryside also offers spectacular scenery, with quiet mountain roads, traditional villages and peaceful valleys to discover.
A little preparation can help you enjoy your visit, particularly if you're travelling through the mountains of northern Vietnam.
Absolutely. Ban Gioc Waterfall offers some of the most spectacular natural scenery in northern Vietnam. The combination of cascading water, towering limestone mountains and peaceful countryside makes it a memorable destination for nature lovers, photographers and adventurous travellers.
Whether you choose to take a bamboo raft closer to the waterfall, admire the panoramic views or simply enjoy the surrounding landscapes, Ban Gioc is a wonderful place to experience the natural beauty of Cao Bang.
If you love dramatic mountain scenery, winding roads, traditional villages and unforgettable viewpoints, the Ha Giang Loop is another incredible experience to add to your northern Vietnam adventure.
